TART CHERRIES
Tart cherries are produced in Michigan, Utah, Wisconsin, New York, Pennsylvania, and Washington. However, with 27,000 bearing acres and nearly 70% of total production, Michigan is the largest tart cherry producer in the United States. Tart cherries are consumed in several forms in the U.S., including juice, dried, frozen,
canned in water and as canned pie filling. There are also several innovative tart cherry products, including tart cherry nutraceuticals, hamburger patties, concentrates and flavorings. Tart cherries are produced in several countries including Hungary, Russia and Germany. However, the biggest competitor to U.S. producers
is Poland, which has grown its market share from 6% in 1980 to 18% in 2004.
